Overview
Mentoring is an invaluable tool to transfer knowledge, skills and wisdom from seasoned and mature role models to less experienced, eager and talented individuals. It helps to limit staff turnover, facilitate the progress of previously disadvantaged individuals, support rapid change and manage the stress associated with new responsibilities. What makes it extremely difficult to know what protégés need from mentors is the fact that they ‘don’t know that they don’t know!’ The mentor on the other hand – as the more experienced partner – has forgotten what he/she didn’t know, and takes many things for granted. The protégé typically ‘has to learn what the mentor has already forgotten’.
