All they need to do is wait until the people to whom the money belongs stop looking for it. As long as the three men follow a ‘simple plan’ which involves keeping the money until after winter and ensuring they tell no one, things should turn out fine. Unfortunately, things are not so simple.

Ethics: In this ethics@movies session you will be exposed to a number of interesting moral dilemmas. We will investigate the idea of the ‘slippery slope’ and see it in action. From a psychological perspective, we will learn that it isn’t so easy to go back once you have done something immoral.

  • Time: 14:00 – 18:00
  • Fee: R 250.00 (incl. VAT)
  • CEU’s: 4 ethics and 2 standard

Film Summary: Dr. Guy Luthan (Hugh Grant) is an emergency medical doctor that treats a homeless man who wandered into the emergency room one night. Strangely, this man already has a hospital bracelet on his arm and incoherently mumbles about a drug Dr. Luthan has never heard about. When the man dies, Dr. Luthan starts investigating the man’s death only to find that his superiors are uncooperative and threaten to fire him if he continues his investigation. What Dr. Luthan uncovers is a medical conspiracy spearheaded by the famous neurosurgeon Dr. Lawrence Myrick (Gene Hackman) and a medical dilemma faced by every medical professional today.

Ethics: Is it justifiable to do medical experiments on people who add little to society so that others may live? Should a few people suffer and die so that medical breakthroughs can be made? Do medical ethics hamper progress in the medical field? We will discuss these questions and more in our last but controversial ethics@movies session.
