Presentation skills

Developing the confidence and capability to give good presentations, and to stand up in front of an audience and speak well, are extremely helpful competencies for self-development. Presentations and public speaking skills are not limited to certain special people - anyone can give a good presentation, or perform public speaking to a professional and impressive standard. Like most things, it simply takes a little preparation and a lot of practice.

The formats and purposes of presentations can be very different, for example: oral (spoken), multimedia (using various media - visuals, audio, etc), powerpoint presentations, short impromptu presentations, long planned presentations, educational or training sessions, lectures, or simply giving a talk on a subject to a group on a voluntary basis for pleasure. Even speeches at weddings and eulogies at funerals are types of presentations. They are certainly a type of public speaking, and are no less stressful to some people.

In this course you will learn how to:
  • understand the theoretical and psychological backdrop for developing your presentation skills. Unpacking: What is a Presentation Quo-efficient (PQ)?
  • explore through a self-report and practical exercise what your current presentation quo-efficient is – what is your level of competence, your level of comfort, your presentation style?
  • exploring what you would like to achieve in building your PQ? In what contexts do you want to apply the skills? How would you like to develop this and what support do you need?
  • understand the 3 modes of persuasion as a critical element in any presentation context
  • deepen your knowledge on presentation tools and how to use these effectively
  • explore the role of body language, eye contact and tone of voice
  • become a POISED presenter. Systematically building knowledge on the key aspects of PQ:
    1. Purpose
    2. Objective
    3. Ideas and content
    4. Structure and subject matter
    5. Experiment
    6. Deliver
