This workshop will provide an overview of commonly used reading and spelling assessments and highlight the importance of taking a broad approach to assessing, understanding and improving reading and spelling


At the end of this workshop, delegates will be able to:
This workshop was designed to provide insight into the knowledge, skills and sensory-based abilities that are needed to becoming a better reader and speller. The importance of considering various aspects, such as book familiarity, vocabulary, visual perception and discrimination, auditory perception and discrimination, comprehension, and motivation will be covered. The attendees will be introduced to the debate between whether to focus on a diagnosis of dyslexia (which may legitimize the reading difficulty, however can lead to labelling and complacency) vs focusing on the exact difficulty the learner is having, and focusing remediation on that (a symptom based approach). The importance of not just providing “more of the same, with a slower pace” in remediation lessons will be highlighted. Suggestions for a multi-faceted approach to improving a learner’s reading and spelling ability will be provided
