This workshop will provide an overview of commonly used reading and spelling assessments and highlight the importance of taking a broad approach to assessing, understanding and improving reading and spelling


This workshop was designed to provide insight into the complexity and inter-relatedness of various areas of development within a child. The workshop will highlight the importance of looking beyond traditional notions of school-readiness assessments that tend to focus just on cognitive and physical tasks. The importance of expanding a school-readiness battery to assess a child more broadly will be discussed. The dangers of ‘teaching to the test’ will be discussed, as well as ideas on how to encourage overall multi-faceted development in young children
